  • UI vision researcher receives grant to study inflammatory eye disease
    Vinit Mahajan, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, has received a five-year, $1.2 million Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health. The award is designed to prepare qualified individuals for careers that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the nation.
  • Research to Prevent Blindness renews support to UI
    Research to Prevent Blindness has awarded a $100,000 grant to support vision research at the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. The funding supports research into the causes, treatment and prevention of blinding diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.

  • New Inherited Eye Disease Discovered
    University of Iowa researchers have found the existence of a new, rare inherited retinal disease. Now the search is on to find the genetic cause, which investigators hope will increase understanding of more common retinal diseases.
    The findings appeared in the Nov. 9 issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology.
  • UI professor receives NIH Director’s New Innovator Award
    Budd Tucker, PhD, assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has been selected as a recipient of the 2010 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director’s New Innovator Award for his research focused on combining state-of-the-art patient-specific stem cell and biodegradable tissue engineering technologies for the treatment of blinding retinal degenerative diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration.

    For the 21st year in a row, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics appears on the list of the leading hospitals in the United States. "The Best Hospitals in America" listing is compiled annually by U.S. News & World Report.

    At UI Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa's only comprehensive academic medical center, 10 specialties are ranked overall. Three of the honored specialties rank among the nation's top 10 in their respective categories:

    --Otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), 4th.
    --Ophthalmology and visual sciences (eyes), 6th.
    --Orthopaedics and rehabilitation, 9th.

  • Mullins appointed to new Kolder professorship
    UI faculty member Robert Mullins is the inaugural recipient of the Hansjoerg E.J.W. Kolder, M.D., Ph.D., Professorship in Best Disease Research. The professorship was established in the UI Carver Family Center for Macular Degeneration through a gift jointly made by Martin G. and Ruth A.   • Professor leads probe into rare eye disease

  • Blind cycling champion leads UI's Project 3000 RAGBRAI Team across Iowa
    A team of a dozen cyclists -- including a blind U.S. Paralympics track cycling national champion -- pedaled 442 miles across Iowa as part of RAGBRAI to raise awareness of and funds for Project 3000. The team raised nearly $40,000 in support of the University of Iowa-based effort that is seeking a cure for rare childhood blinding eye diseases. University of Iowa News Release.
  • The idea to form a RAGBRAI team to support Project 3000 originated with Paul Rosenthal, a Washington, D.C., attorney who is chair and a founding member of the advisory board to the UI Carver Family Center for Macular Degeneration, of which Project 3000 is a part. The center is a unit of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. We appreciate the fact that Paul took the time to chronicle his ride across Iowa. We especially appreciate the fact that he and his team raised $40K for Project 3000 in the process!
  • Endowed UI professorship named for Keech; Drack named to position
    Associate Professor Arlene V. Drack, M.D. has been named the inaugural Keech Professor in an investiture ceremony honoring Ronald V. Keech, M.D., a University of Iowa physician renowned as a pioneering leader in pediatric ophthalmology. His legacy will live on at the UI through the endowed Ronald V. Keech, M.D., Professorship in Ophthalmic Genetics in the UI Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and the John and Marcia Carver Nonprofit Genetic Testing Laboratory (CNGTL) at the UI Roy J. and Lucille A.
